American Electric Power Company, Inc. engages in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electric power. The company generates electricity using coal and lignite, natural gas, nuclear, and hydroelectric energy. It distributes electric power at wholesale to other electric utility companies, rural electric co-operatives, municipalities, and other market participants, as well as to retail customers in its service areas. American Electric Power Company operates in the states of Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. As of December 31, 2008, it owned or leased approximately 37,000 megawatts of power generation capacity. The company was founded in 1906 and is based in Columbus, Ohio.
