Alabama Power Company operates as a vertically integrated utility company providing electricity to residential, commercial, and industrial customers. It engages in the generation, purchase, transmission, distribution, and sale of electricity in Alabama. As of December 31, 2008, the company sold electricity at retail in approximately 650 communities, including Anniston, Birmingham, Gadsden, Mobile, Montgomery, and Tuscaloosa; and at wholesale to 15 municipally-owned electric distribution systems. It also sells electric appliances. The company was founded in 1906 and is based in Birmingham, Alabama. Alabama Power Company is a subsidiary of The Southern Company.
