The company's fast and gigabit Ethernet products comprise access points, routers, gateways, Ethernet physical layer, transceivers, and switches for personal computer customers into local area network-on-motherboard applications. Atheros Communications sells its products to original equipment manufacturers and original design manufacturers through direct sales staff, independent sales representatives, and distributors primarily in Taiwan, the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, and the United States. It has a collaboration agreement with Cavium Networks Inc. to offer an integrated platform that enables wireless HD 1080p60 video transmission to flat panel displays. The company was formerly known as T-Span Systems Corporation and changed its name to Atheros Communications, Inc. in May 2000. Atheros Communications was founded in 1998 and is headquartered in Santa Clara, California.
