Atmos Energy Corporation engages in the distribution, transmission, and storage of natural gas in the United States. The company distributes natural gas to approximately 3.2 million residential, commercial, public authority, and industrial customers located in Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, and Virginia. It provides natural gas management and marketing services to municipalities, other local gas distribution companies, and industrial customers in the southeastern and midwestern states; and natural gas transportation and storage services to various third parties. As of September 30, 2008, the company owned approximately 77,462 miles of underground distribution and transmission mains, and 6,069 miles of gas transmission and gathering lines. Atmos Energy Corporation, formerly known as Energas Company, was founded in 1906 and is headquartered in Dallas, Texas.
