Doral Financial Corporation, through its subsidiaries, provides a range of financial services primarily in Puerto Rico and New York. The company operates in four segments: Banking, Mortgage Banking, Insurance Agency, and Institutional Securities. The Banking segment offers commercial lending, consumer loans, leasing, and construction lending services; accepts deposits from the general public and institutions; obtains borrowings; invests in mortgage-backed securities and other investment securities; and offers traditional banking services. It also operates a federal savings bank, which gathers deposits through an Internet-based platform, originates and invests in interim loans secured by multi-family apartment buildings and commercial properties, and invests in investment securities. As of December 31, 2008, this segment operated 41 branch offices in Puerto Rico. The Mortgage Banking segment operates mortgage origination and servicing platforms, and offers residential mortgage loans, as well as provides residential mortgage lending, mortgage origination channels, mortgage loan underwriting, mortgage loan servicing, loans and securitization sale, and secondary mortgage market and tax treatment services. It also offers mortgage loans insured by federal housing administration, veterans administration, and rural housing service. The Insurance Agency segment offers property, casualty, life, and title insurance to its mortgage loan customers. The Institutional Securities segment acts as a co-investment manager for a local fixed-income investment company. The company was founded in 1972 and is based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Doral Financial Corporation is a subsidiary of Doral Holdings Delaware, LLC.
