FirstCity Financial Corporation operates as a financial services company. The company operates in two segments, Portfolio Asset Acquisition and Resolution, and Special Situations Platform. The Portfolio Asset Acquisition and Resolution segment acquires portfolios of performing and non-performing commercial and consumer loans, real estate assets, and certain other assets at a discount to their legal principal balances or appraised values, as well as services and resolves such portfolio assets in an effort to maximize the present value of the ultimate cash recoveries. The Special Situations Platform segment provides investment capital to privately-held middle-market companies through flexible capital structuring arrangements. Its capital investments primarily take the form of senior and junior financing arrangements, as well as include direct equity investments, common equity warrants, distressed debt transactions, and leveraged buyouts. The company has operations in the United States, Mexico, France, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile. FirstCity Financial Corporation was founded in 1950 and is headquartered in Waco, Texas with additional offices in the United States and Mexico.
