It also involves in the design, development, and licensing of linguistic technology, such as spelling error detection software in 36 languages for use in application software, electronic products, and on the Internet to third parties. In addition, the company offers reference titles, including monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, such as Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and the Holy Bible; translators and test preparation devices; electronic organizers; and entertainment-oriented publications and educational publications in electronic format. As of March 31, 2009, Franklin Electronic Publishers distributed its reference works and general literature through 49,000 retail outlets in approximately 50 countries, and through Internet and catalog mailings direct to customers. It also uses direct channels, including own sales and marketing force, independent sales representative organizations, and third party alliances to serve specialty markets, such as the professional, educational, and customized application markets. The company was founded in 1981 and is based in Burlington, New Jersey.
