Fred's, Inc. and its subsidiaries sell general merchandise through retail discount stores and pharmacies. Its stores and pharmacies offer pharmaceuticals, household goods, apparel and linens, food and tobacco products, health and beauty aids, and paper and cleaning supplies principally to low, middle, and fixed income families. The company also sells general merchandise to its 24 franchisees. As of January 31, 2009, it operated 639 discount general merchandise stores and 284 pharmacies located in 15 states, primarily in the southeastern United States. The company was founded in 1947 and is headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee.
