GSI Group Inc. supplies precision motion component products, lasers, and laser-based manufacturing systems to the electronics, semiconductor, medical, aerospace, and industrial markets worldwide. Its Precision Technology segment offers lasers that are used for welding, cutting, drilling, surface marking, and engraving of metal and plastic parts; and scanners and optics for product laser marking and coding, laser machining and welding, high density via hole drilling of printed circuit boards, retinal scanning, laser-based vision correction, high resolution printing, 2D or 3D imaging, and laser projection and entertainment. This segment also offers printed circuit board spindles for boring small and precise holes in printed circuit boards; encoders to measure movement within sub-micron levels in confocal microscopes, positioning magnetic rings on hard drives, and precision manufacturing and coordinate measuring systems; and thermal printers for the medical instrumental and defibrillator markets. The company's Semiconductor Systems segment provides production systems that process semiconductor wafers. It offers WaferRepair, which is used to raise production yields for DRAM and NAND wafers; WaferTrim systems that are used in the production of integrated circuits; WaferMark systems used to mark silicon wafers with characters or markings; CircuitTrim systems for the production of thick and thin film resistive components and hybrid circuits for surface mount technology electronic circuits; and SVS inspection equipment to inspect pre-and post-reflow solder paste, and component placement on printed circuit boards. This segment sells its products to semiconductor integrated device manufacturers and wafer processors, as well as electronic component and assembly firms. GSI Group sells its products through a direct sales force, distributors, and sales agents. The company, formerly known as GSI Lumonics Inc., was founded in 1970 and is based in Bedford, Massachusetts.
