Great Plains Energy Incorporated, through its subsidiaries, engages in the generation, transmission, distribution, and sale of electricity in the United States. It generates electricity utilizing coal, nuclear, natural gas, oil, and wind resources. The company also provides retail electricity supply services. As of December 31, 2008, it served approximately 820,000 customers located in western Missouri and eastern Kansas comprising 722,000 residential and 96,000 commercial customers, as well as 2,800 industrials, municipalities, and other electric utilities. Great Plains Energy had approximately 6,000 megawatts of generating capacity. The company was founded in 1919 and is headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri.
