James River Coal Company, through its subsidiaries, engages in mining, processing, and selling bituminous, steam, and industrial-grade coal in eastern Kentucky and southern Indiana. It conducts mining operations in Bell County, Bledsoe, Blue Diamond, Leeco, McCoy Elkhorn, and Triad mining complexes. As of December 31, 2008, the company had 6 mining complexes, including 17 underground mines, 14 surface mines, and 10 preparation plants, as well as controlled approximately 277.1 million tons of proven and probable coal reserves in Central Appalachia and the Midwest. It sells coal to electric utilities and industrial customers. The company was founded in 1988 and is headquartered in Richmond, Virginia.
