Martek Biosciences Corporation engages in the development and commercialization of novel products from microalgae, fungi, and other microbes in the United States and internationally. Its products include life'sDHA, a vegetarian source of the omega-3 fatty acid DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), for use in infant formula, pregnancy and nursing products, foods and beverages, dietary supplements, and animal feeds; and life'sARA, a vegetarian source of the omega-6 fatty acid ARA (arachidonic acid), for use in infant formula. The company's nutritional oils comprise fatty acid components, such as DHA and ARA, which enhance mental and visual development in infants, as well as enable proper functioning of brain function and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. It also provides contract manufacturing services for the production of enzymes, specialty chemicals, vitamins, agricultural specialties, and intermediates. The company sells oils containing fatty acids under the names DHASCO, Neuromins, and ARASCO. Martek Biosciences has a collaboration agreement with a Canadian biotechnology company to co-develop DHA products from plants, as well as an agreement with DSM Food SpecialtiesÂ’ B.V. for the production and supply of ARA. The company was founded in 1985 and is based in Columbia, Maryland.
