Midas, Inc. provides retail automotive services principally through franchised, company-operated, or licensed shops in the United States, Canada, Europe, and internationally. The company's retail shops offer automotive repair and maintenance services, such as exhaust, brake, suspension, air conditioning, tires, batteries, and various other maintenance services. As of January 3, 2009, it operated 1,674 franchised and company-operated shops under the ‘Midas’ brand in North America; and 116 shops under the ‘SpeeDee’ brand in the United States, as well as 2,682 ‘Midas’ and ‘SpeeDee’ shops internationally. The company also engages in supply chain activities, including the provision of merchandising services to franchisees through relationships with vendors, who distribute products and equipment directly to shops. In addition, its real estate activities include the development, ownership, and leasing of retail shops for franchisees; and point-of-sale technology operations consist of the ownership, development, sale, and leasing of automotive shop management software to franchisees and other third-party automotive service providers. The company was founded in 1954 and is headquartered in Itasca, Illinois. Midas Inc. (NYSE:MDS) operates independently of Whitman Corporation as of January 30, 1998.
