Its system consists of a network of 27 low-Earth orbit satellites, and accompanying ground infrastructure. The company's two-way communications system enables its customers and end-users, including businesses and government agencies to track, monitor, control, and communicate with fixed and mobile assets located worldwide. It also offers terrestrial-based cellular communication services through reseller agreements with cellular wireless providers. The company markets and sells its products and services directly to original equipment manufacturers and government customers; and indirectly through value-added resellers (VARS), international VARs and licensees, and country representatives in the commercial and consumer transportation, heavy equipment, fixed asset monitoring, marine vessels, and government and homeland security markets. ORBCOMM has strategic relationships with Delphi Automotive Systems LLC, General Electric Company, and the U.S. Coast Guard. As of December 31, 2008, it had approximately 460,000 billable subscriber communicators activated on its communications system. The company was founded in 2001 and is based in Fort Lee, New Jersey.
