PharmAthene, Inc., a biodefense company, together with its subsidiaries, engages in development and commercialization of medical countermeasures against biological and chemical weapons in the United States. Its product candidates include SparVax, a recombinant protective antigen (rPA) anthrax vaccine for use against human anthrax infection has completed one Phase I and two Phase II clinical trials; and Valortim, a human monoclonal antibody that has completed Phase I clinical trial is used for the prevention and treatment of anthrax infection. The company's product candidates also include Protexia, a nerve agent countermeasure is a recombinant form of human butyrylcholinesterase, and a naturally occurring enzyme in the Phase I clinical trial, which mimics a natural bioscavenger for the treatment or prevention of nerve agent poisoning by organophosphate compounds, including nerve gases and pesticides. In addition, its product candidates include RypVax, a recombinant dual antigen vaccine that is used to protect individuals before exposure to Yersinia pestis (a pneumonic and bubonic plague); and rPA anthrax vaccine, which is stored, transported, and used without the need for a conventional cold chain for civilian biodefense deployment within the SNS. The company's customers include National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the U.S. Department of Defense, Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, and the U.S. National Institutes of Health. It has a collaboration agreement with Medarex, Inc. to develop and commercialize MDX-1303 (Valortim). PharmAthene, Inc. was founded in 2001 and is headquartered in Annapolis, Maryland.
