The Sherwin-Williams Company engages in the development, manufacture, distribution, and sale of paints, coatings, and related products. It operates in three segments: Paint Stores Group, Consumer Group, and Global Finishes Group. The Paint Stores Group segment sells paint, coatings, and related products to end-use customers. This segment markets and sells Sherwin-Williams branded architectural paints and coatings, industrial and marine products, and original equipment manufacturer product finishes and related items. As of December 31, 2008, it operated 3,346 paint stores in the United States, Canada, Jamaica, Virgin Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, and Puerto Rico. The Consumer Group segment engages in the development, manufacture, and distribution of paints, coatings, and related products to third party customers primarily in the United States and Canada, as well as to the Paint Stores Group. The Global Finishes Group segment develops, licenses, manufactures, distributes, and sells architectural paint and coatings, industrial and marine products, automotive finishes and refinish products, and original equipment manufacturer coatings and related products in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. This segment also licenses certain technology and trade names worldwide, as well as distributes Sherwin-Williams branded products through a network of 541 company-operated branches, direct sales staff, and outside sales representatives to retailers, dealers, jobbers, licensees, and various third party distributors. The company was founded in 1866 and is headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio.
