Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. provides analytical instruments, equipment, reagents and consumables, software, and services for research, manufacture, analysis, discovery, and diagnostics. The company operates in two segments, Analytical Technologies and Laboratory Products and Services. The Analytical Technologies segment offers scientific instruments, including analytical instrumentation to analyze prepared samples; biosciences products for general chemistry and life sciences applications; software interpretation tools and development support; and laboratory automation equipment and systems. It also offers diagnostics products and services used in healthcare laboratories to prepare and analyze patient samples to detect and diagnose diseases; process instruments that provide measurement solutions and services; and solutions and services for environmental monitoring, safety, and security. The Laboratory Products and Services segment offers laboratory equipment, including sample preparation, environment storage and handling equipment, and laboratory workstations; laboratory consumables; research market solutions; and healthcare market products comprising analytical equipment, diagnostic tools, and reagents. This segment also offers workplace and first responder equipment, protective gear, and apparel; and packaging, warehousing, distribution, labeling, and analytical laboratory services. Thermo Fisher serves pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, hospitals and clinical diagnostic labs, universities, research institutions, government agencies, and environmental and industrial process control settings in the United States, Germany, England, and internationally. The company was formerly known as Thermo Electron Corporation and changed its name to Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. in November 2006 as a result of the merger with Fisher Scientific International Inc. Thermo Fisher was founded in 1956 and is based in Waltham, Massachusetts.
