Its Chemicals segment produces and markets titanium dioxide pigment, a white inorganic pigment used to impart whiteness, brightness, and opacity for products, such as coatings, plastics, paper, fibers, food, ceramics, and cosmetics. It also mines ilmenite in Norway. The company's Component Products segment manufactures locking mechanisms, including cabinet locks, pin tumbler locking mechanisms, disc tumbler locks, and electronic locks for postal, transportation, furniture, banking, vending, and other industries; and security products that are used in various applications, including ignition systems, mailboxes, vending and gaming machines, parking meters, electrical circuit panels, storage compartments, office furniture, and medical cabinet security. This segment also provides furniture components comprising precision ball bearing slides and ergonomic computer support systems for use in applications, such as computer related equipment, tool storage cabinets, imaging equipment, file cabinets, desk drawers, automated teller machines, appliances, and other applications; and offers marine instruments, hardware, and accessories for performance boats. Its Waste Management segment engages in processing, treating, storing, and disposing hazardous, toxic, and certain low-level radioactive wastes. It serves chemical, aerospace, and electronics businesses, as well as governmental agencies. Valhi, Inc. also produces titanium sponge, melted products, and mill products for commercial, aerospace, military, and medical markets. It sells its products primarily in North America, Europe, and Asia. Valhi, Inc., through a joint venture agreement with Tioxide America, Inc., owns and operates a chloride process titanium dioxide facility in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The company was founded in 1932 and is based in Dallas, Texas. Valhi, Inc. is a subsidiary of Contran Corporation.
